Virtual Heating Plant Gleisdorf

DESCRIPTION

District heating (DH) of Gleisdorf is a perfect example of the transition to 4th generation of DH in small scale and the therewith related challenges and requirements regarding intelligent operation and control of the systems, merit-order of production units, system hydraulics and short- and mid-term enlargement scenarios. The ongoing work develops and demonstrates innovative solutions to overcome these challenges and lead to the establishment of a future proof, highly efficient, 100% renewable and locally supplied district heating system for the City. Key element of the future concept is the implementation of a virtual heating plant (VHP) approach for an intelligent and predictive control based on a fully digitised system. Additionally, various supporting activities such as continuous measures to lower system temperatures and implementation as well as demonstration of innovative consumer site supply concepts are ongoing.

AREAS OF SPECIAL COMPETENCE

Implementation of a VHP concept for DH system, incorporating technical measures such as storage, sector coupling (integration waste water treatment plant - WWTP, heat pump solutions), low-temperature heat supply, advancing monitoring and control, central and decentral heat supply.

WHAT CAN BE TESTED

The living lab will provide different possibilities to advance green energy transition in the district heating system of the City of Gleisdorf while ensuring security of supply by different measures. These measures may include smart sector integration & using synergies with other infrastructures. Furthermore, user and stakeholder integration will take place.

AVAILABLE INFRASTRUCTURE

The network is rather complex compared to its size with 4 central/decentral heat production units (in total 7 biomass/ gas boilers, 4 thermal solar plants) and 18 storage units distributed all over the DH system.
