Sundom Smart Grid

DESCRIPTION

Sundom Smart Grid is a living lab environment created during a project which was active between 1.6.2014 – 31.08.2016. It provides continuous measurements from a real medium voltage grid to be used for various smart grid related research. The area covered includes also small amount of renewable energy production. The real-time data from the area is delivered to the laboratory of the University of Vaasa by using IEC 61850 based communication through a fiber-optic communication network.

AREAS OF SPECIAL COMPETENCE

Power system protection and condition monitoring. Controlling the flexibility resources. Managing the ancillary services.

WHAT CAN BE TESTED

Testing the effects of various control actions of distributed energy resources (DER) to the medium voltage grid. In the testing a digital twin of the Sundom Smart Grid with real data can be applied. The controllable DER is available only in the digital twin.

AVAILABLE INFRASTRUCTURE

The site consists of a medium voltage grid fed by a primary substation. The consumption is mainly households. There is one wind power plant of 3.6.MW and a solar power plant of 33 kW.
